Good morning Church!
Dear people of God, welcome back to our Sunday service and we are glad to praise and worship, our living God again, together.
We will continue with our ongoing series, “Presence of God” (Part-3). The chapters we would be focusing on today will be 2 Chronicles 29-32.
After these things and these acts of faithfulness, Sennacherib king of Assyria came and invaded Judah and encamped against the fortified cities, thinking to win them for himself. And when Hezekiah saw that Sennacherib had come and intended to fight against Jerusalem, he planned with his officers and his mighty men to stop the water of the springs that were outside the city; and they helped him.
2 Chronicles 32:1-3
And he set combat commanders over the people and gathered them together to him in the square at the gate of the city and spoke encouragingly to them, saying, “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or dismayed before the king of Assyria and all the horde that is with him, for there are more with us than with him. With him is an arm of flesh, but with us is the Lord our God, to help us and to fight our battles.” And the people took confidence from the words of Hezekiah king of Judah.
2 Chronicles 32:6-8
And the Lord sent an angel, who cut off all the mighty warriors and commanders and officers in the camp of the king of Assyria. So he returned with shame of face to his own land. And when he came into the house of his god, some of his own sons struck him down there with the sword.
2 Chronicles 32:21
Those who trust God with their safety, must use proper means, else they tempt him. God will provide, but so must we also. Hezekiah gathered his people together, and spake comfortably to them. A believing confidence in God, will raise us above the prevailing fear of man. Let the good subjects and soldiers of Jesus Christ, rest upon his word, and boldly say, Since God is for us, who can be against us? By the favour of God, enemies are lost, and friends gained.
And he did what was right in the eyes of the Lord , according to all that David his father had done.
2 Chronicles 29:2
There were three things Hezekiah did that we can learn from:
1: He opened the temple: The temples needs to be opened.
In the first year of his reign, in the first month, he opened the doors of the house of the Lord and repaired them.
2 Chronicles 29:3
At the age of 25 he became a king. He looked at his people and knew what kind are people he is dealing who have stopped trusting in God. When Hezekiah came to the crown, he applied at once to work reform. Those who begin with God, begin at the right end of their work, and it will prosper accordingly. Those that turn their backs upon God’s ordinances, may truly be said to forsake God himself. There are still such neglects, if the word be not duly read and opened, for that was signified by the lighting the lamps, and also if prayers and praise be not offered up, for that was signified by the burning incense. Neglect of God’s worship was the cause of the calamities they had lain under.
And said to them, “Hear me, Levites! Now consecrate yourselves, and consecrate the house of the Lord , the God of your fathers, and carry out the filth from the Holy Place.
2 Chronicles 29:5
Besides the great number of burnt offerings, there was the fat of the peace offerings, and there were the drink offerings for the burnt offerings. Thus the service of the house of the Lord was restored.
2 Chronicles 29:35
Bible suggests that Holy Spirit will convict our hearts and show us the way. We need to open our heart.
2: He consecrated the house of God: Remove that which isn’t from God.
They gathered their brothers and consecrated themselves and went in as the king had commanded, by the words of the Lord , to cleanse the house of the Lord . The priests went into the inner part of the house of the Lord to cleanse it, and they brought out all the uncleanness that they found in the temple of the Lord into the court of the house of the Lord . And the Levites took it and carried it out to the brook Kidron.
2 Chronicles 29:15-16
The Lord alone can prepare the heart of man for vital godliness: when much good is done in a little time, the glory must be ascribed to him; and all who love him or the souls of men, will rejoice therein. Let those that do good work, learn to do it well.
Consecration is the change of mind. As a believer, we need not be like people of this world, but we need to become like God.
Illustration: As a daily chore, we dispose off the garbage everyday in the morning. Similarly, there are few things in our life we need to discard in our spiritual life. We need to consecrate our hearts and meed to follow the instructions of the holy spirit.
As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance,
1 Peter 1:14
Who saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began,
2 Timothy 1:9
Since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit, bringing holiness to completion in the fear of God.
2 Corinthians 7:1
Consecrate yourselves, therefore, and be holy, for I am the Lord your God. Keep my statutes and do them; I am the Lord who sanctifies you.
Leviticus 20:7-8
Strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord.
Hebrews 12:14
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
Romans 12:2
3: He established the temple worship back.
Then Hezekiah the king rose early and gathered the officials of the city and went up to the house of the Lord . And they brought seven bulls, seven rams, seven lambs, and seven male goats for a sin offering for the kingdom and for the sanctuary and for Judah. And he commanded the priests, the sons of Aaron, to offer them on the altar of the Lord . So they slaughtered the bulls, and the priests received the blood and threw it against the altar. And they slaughtered the rams, and their blood was thrown against the altar. And they slaughtered the lambs, and their blood was thrown against the altar. Then the goats for the sin offering were brought to the king and the assembly, and they laid their hands on them, and the priests slaughtered them and made a sin offering with their blood on the altar, to make atonement for all Israel. For the king commanded that the burnt offering and the sin offering should be made for all Israel. And he stationed the Levites in the house of the Lord with cymbals, harps, and lyres, according to the commandment of David and of Gad the king’s seer and of Nathan the prophet, for the commandment was from the Lord through his prophets. The Levites stood with the instruments of David, and the priests with the trumpets. Then Hezekiah commanded that the burnt offering be offered on the altar. And when the burnt offering began, the song to the Lord began also, and the trumpets, accompanied by the instruments of David king of Israel. The whole assembly worshiped, and the singers sang, and the trumpeters sounded. All this continued until the burnt offering was finished. When the offering was finished, the king and all who were present with him bowed themselves and worshiped.
2 Chronicles 29:20-29
As soon as Hezekiah heard that the temple was ready, he lost no time. Atonement must be made for the sins of the last reign. It was not enough to lament and forsake those sins; they brought a sin-offering. Our repentance and reformation will not obtain pardon but in and through Christ, who was made sin, that is, a sin-offering for us. While the offerings were on the altar, the Levites sang. Sorrow for sin must not prevent us from praising God. The king and the congregation gave their consent to all that was done. It is not enough for us to be where God is worshipped, if we do not ourselves worship with the heart. And we should offer up our spiritual sacrifices of praise and thanksgiving, and devote ourselves and all we have, as sacrifices, acceptable to the Father only through the Redeemer.
So what do we understand from these three things king Hezekiah did?
1: Open your heart because your heart is the temple of the Holy Ghost.
2: Clean Your heart.
3: Establish worship.
When we seek presence of God, we are worshipping God.
“Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created.”
Revelation 4:11
God is not going to be fooled by out half baked act. To appear holy and being one are both different things and God does understands this better than anyone would. God doesn’t looks at our appearance, but He looks at our heart.
And the Lord said: “Because this people draw near with their mouth and honor me with their lips, while their hearts are far from me, and their fear of me is a commandment taught by men,
Isaiah 29:13
If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land. Now my eyes will be open and my ears attentive to the prayer that is made in this place. For now I have chosen and consecrated this house that my name may be there forever. My eyes and my heart will be there for all time.
2 Chronicles 7:14-16
No weapon that is fashioned against you shall succeed, and you shall refute every tongue that rises against you in judgment. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord and their vindication from me, declares the Lord .”
Isaiah 54:17
When my enemies turn back, they stumble and perish before your presence.
Psalm 9:3
I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart; I will recount all of your wonderful deeds.
Psalm 9:1
Hezekiah looked at his people and understood the condition of his temple. What is the condition of your temple? Consecrated heart ready to worship God? If not, today is the time to open your heart and cry unto God and ask for His presence in your life.
The times are hard but God is in control. We thank you for joining our service today and we look forward to see you again next Sunday. God bless!
