Good morning Church!
Welcome back to our Sunday service and we are glad to praise and worship, our living God again and together.
We will continue with our ongoing series, “Looking unto Jesus” (Part-3).
There is nothing in this life more important that Christ Jesus, so look unto Him. Fix your eyes upon Him!
Looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.
Hebrews 12:2
What does it means to look unto Jesus? Well, it simply means that you are intentionally looking unto God, surrendering yourself to Him and spemding time in His word as well as prayer.
Those who look to him are radiant, and their faces shall never be ashamed.
Psalm 34:5
Psalm 34 verse is a testimony if David, where he has been through a lot, yet neither he nor his people were put to shame.
If we read the verses before and after the verse five, it gives a greater picture about what God is capable of doing towards someone who looks unto Him.
I sought the Lord, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears. Those who look to him are radiant, and their faces shall never be ashamed. This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him and saved him out of all his troubles.
Psalm 34:4-6
The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and delivers them.
Psalm 34:7
Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!
Psalm 34:8
Oh, fear the Lord , you his saints, for those who fear him have no lack!
Psalm 34:9
The eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous and his ears toward their cry.
Psalm 34:15
The Lord redeems the life of his servants; none of those who take refuge in him will be condemned.
Psalm 34:22
If we hope to spend eternity in praising God, it is fit that we should spend much of our time here in this work. He never said to any one, Seek ye me in vain. David’s prayers helped to silence his fears; many besides him have looked unto the Lord by faith and prayer, and it has wonderfully revived and comforted them. When we look to the world, we are perplexed, and at a loss. But on looking to Christ depends our whole salvation, and all things needful thereunto do so also. This poor man, whom no man looked upon with any respect, or looked after with any concern, was yet welcome to the throne of grace; the Lord heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles. The holy angels minister to the saints, and stand for them against the powers of darkness. All the glory be to the Lord of the angels. By taste and sight we both make discoveries, and have enjoyment; Taste and see God’s goodness; take notice of it, and take the comfort of it. He makes all truly blessed that trust in him. As to the things of the other world, they shall have grace sufficient for the support of spiritual life. And as to this life, they shall have what is necessary from the hand of God. Paul had all, and abounded, because he was content. Those who trust to themselves, and think their own efforts sufficient for them, shall want; but they shall be fed who trust in the Lord. Those shall not want, who with quietness work, and mind their own business.
Psalm 34 was written when David was rescued. Instead of relying on himself, David unto God. Verse 4 clearly suggested that David found security in Gid and he was rescued, not by his own doing, but due to God and God alone.
But David said to Saul, “Your servant used to keep sheep for his father. And when there came a lion, or a bear, and took a lamb from the flock.”
1 Samuel 17:34
Another man, Moses, looked unto God and God did greater things for him.
When Moses came down from Mount Sinai, with the two tablets of the testimony in his hand as he came down from the mountain, Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone because he had been talking with God. Aaron and all the people of Israel saw Moses, and behold, the skin of his face shone, and they were afraid to come near him. But Moses called to them, and Aaron and all the leaders of the congregation returned to him, and Moses talked with them. Afterward all the people of Israel came near, and he commanded them all that the Lord had spoken with him in Mount Sinai. And when Moses had finished speaking with them, he put a veil over his face. Whenever Moses went in before the Lord to speak with him, he would remove the veil, until he came out. And when he came out and told the people of Israel what he was commanded, the people of Israel would see the face of Moses, that the skin of Moses’ face was shining. And Moses would put the veil over his face again, until he went in to speak with him.
Exodus 34:29-35
Let us take and try to understand the two instances what happened to David when he looked unto God and his eyes were fixed on God.
1: The first instance is when we hear the story where there are two people standing against eachother. David looked unto God.
One among them was favorite of all, one among them was favorite to none.
Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you down and cut off your head. And I will give the dead bodies of the host of the Philistines this day to the birds of the air and to the wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel, and that all this assembly may know that the Lord saves not with sword and spear. For the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give you into our hand.”
1 Samuel 17:45-47
The security and presumption of fools destroy them. Nothing can excel the humility, faith, and piety which appear in David’s words. He expressed his assured expectation of success; he gloried in his mean appearance and arms, that the victory might be ascribed to the Lord alone. Not only him alone, David also encouraged his people to fix eyes unto God.
2: The second instance was, When David committed sin with Bethsheba, he looked unto God.
Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin! For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment. Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me. Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being, and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart.
Psalm 51:1-6
Psalm 103 talks about fixing our eyes upon Jesus. There are similar verses suggesting us to kook unto God.
– Isaiah 53:6
– Romans 3:23
– Psalm 130:4
If you have done something wrong, don’t sit troubled and think what you must do. David encourages us to seek God’s intervention.
Psalm 51 doesn’t only talks about David’s cries, it also relates to the life and death of Jesus.
But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Romans 5:8
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
Ephesians 2:8-10
When we look unto Jesus, He is going to do greater things with us, just like He did with David and Moses.
I have a question to you all today. Are your eyes fixed upon Jesus? Are you looking unto God? If you think you are finding yourself to be in a situation that David was in, then today is the time that you seek God’s face and look unto Him. And just like how Psalm 34 suggests, fix your eyes upon God and He is going to do greater things through you.
We hope you are encouraged with today’s service. We look forward to connect back with you all again, the next Sunday. Untill then, God be with you and God Bless you!
