Everywhere, we hear, there is a talk about virus and anxiety. Don’t be anxious, you are chosen one and a child of God. Just like a father takes care of his children, imagine how capable is He who created you? Our God is able, come to Him!
Preserve me, O God, for in you I take refuge.
Psalm 16:1
Today we will be learning about “True Discipleship through Brokeness!“
Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.
James 1:2-5
Christianity teaches men to be joyful under troubles: such exercises are sent from God’s love; and trials in the way of duty will brighten our graces now, and our crown at last. Let us take care, in times of trial, that patience, and not passion, is set to work in us: whatever is said or done, let patience have the saying and doing of it. When the work of patience is complete, it will furnish all that is necessary for our Christian race and warfare. We should not pray so much for the removal of affliction, as for wisdom to make a right use of it. And who does not want wisdom to guide him under trials, both in regulating his own spirit, and in managing his affairs? Here is something in answer to every discouraging turn of the mind, when we go to God under a sense of our own weakness and folly. If, after all, any should say, This may be the case with some, but I fear I shall not succeed, the promise is, to any that ask, it shall be given. A mind that has single and prevailing regard to its spiritual and eternal interest, and that keeps steady in its purposes for God, will grow wise by afflictions, will continue fervent in devotion, and rise above trials and oppositions. When our faith and spirits rise and fall with second causes, there will be unsteadiness in our words and actions. This may not always expose men to contempt in the world, but such ways cannot please God. No condition of life is such as to hinder rejoicing in God. Those of low degree may rejoice, if they are exalted to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom of God; and the rich may rejoice in humbling providences, that lead to a humble and lowly disposition of mind. Worldly wealth is a withering thing. Then, let him that is rich rejoice in the grace of God, which makes and keeps him humble; and in the trials and exercises which teach him to seek happiness in and from God, not from perishing enjoyments.
Discipleship is very important for us but what more important is understanding discipleship that too through the way of brokenness.
The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.
Psalm 51:17
The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.
Psalm 34:18
For he did not remember to show kindness, but pursued the poor and needy and the brokenhearted, to put them to death.
Psalm 109:16
He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.
Psalm 147:3
The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound;
Isaiah 61:1
Bible thoroughly talks about brokenness, that you cam use it to glorify Him and enter the realm of His unconditional love and blessings.
When we read the word of God, we see the people who were used by God were broken, most of them if not all.
Few examples:
– Jesus took five loaves of bread and broke them and only after that it was multiplied and distributed among 5000.
– While Jesus was in Bethany, reclining at the table in the home of Simon the Leper, Mary came with an alabaster jar of very expensive perfume, made of pure nard. She broke the jar and poured the perfume on Jesus’ head.
– Most importantly, Jesus’ body was broken and because of that we are saved.
Whatever we do, until and unless we are not broken, our journey towards discipleship won’t bear fruits!
Another example of brokenness:
– Moses was trained in Pharaoh’s palace where he learned the culture as well as Egyptian tradition. But then he ran away from that palace and lived in wilderness for 40 years. Imagine a man living in a palace and ruling people, now living in the wild with pain amd struggle. When God met him through the burning bush, Moses could have told that “I’m glad Lord that you chose me, because I know the geography of Egypt and people in general”. However, he told that he cannot even speak well. Moses was broken at that point of time! God gave Moses, his brother Aaron to accompany him and gave Moses His strength to go with him. Now we can see that Moses brought Israelites from the slavery, out of Egypt.
Brokenness is so important that it brings you to your absolute humbleness. Sometime we pray and ask God about many things for us. Those are self centered prayers and not God centered prayers.
To be broken in life is the beginning of our revival! Discipleship will take place when we are broken and become humble in front of God.
If you want to be witness of God and want power of Holy Spirit in you, you need brokenness.
Couple of signs that shows we are not broken:
1: If our player is only a routine, then we are not broken.
2: If we run our life on our own terms and not allowing the Holy Spirit to take control of our lives, we are not broken.
3: If there is no power of the Resurrected Savior in our lives and our works are compiled with our own might, we are not broken.
4: If there is no humility. Moreover, pride reigns in us, we are not broken.
If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.
2 Chronicles 7:14
Do uou want God to work in you? To construct you? To build you? Then you need brokenness!
You know in your heart whether there is brokenness in your heart or not. Whether there is humility or arrogance. You know it deep in your heart.
People of God, we believe God is speaking with you through His words and through His life. All you need is brokenness to enter His discipleship. Come before Him, surrender your life and submit completely and allow Him to re-create you.
We hope you are encouraged with today’s sermon and look forward to go down on your knees and seek God with brokenness. We look forward to see you all again next Sunday. God Bless!
